In the early Seventies I met Chad Varah who founded the Samaritans, the organisation that offers support to the suicidal, and I was a volunteer at the branch in Central London for many years.

I have also been a volunteer at the Maytree Respite Centre for the Suicidal in Finsbury Park, which offers residential support.

I have been patron of a small charity called Women’s Health Concern since 2002, which offers advice to women on areas of health that are often poorly served by the NHS.

I am also involved with Beat, formerly the Eating Disorders Association. I am patron of the Cirencester Beat Self-Help Group and was a Trustee of the main charity for six years and am now a member of the Beat Council.
